![[SPRING RANCH]](House.jpg)
Come stay at the home of lumber and cattle baron William Kent, one of the original settlers of Mendocino. He heard of the huge redwood trees of northern California while he was logging in Maine, so he packed his sawmill on a sailing ship and came around South American to log these giants. After starting a successful logging operation in the Big River Basin, Kent realized there was more money in providing beef to the expanding lumber industry than in logging itself. He therefore purchased a 1000-acre tract just 1 mile south of the town of Mendocino and proceeded to build his ranch.
The ranch is centrally located with the picturesque village of Mendocino just 1 mile to the north, and the village of Little River just 1/4 mile to the south. The ranch is now called Spring Ranch after the family that owned the ranch for the last 40 years and sold the oceanfront parcel to the state park system.
The house is ideally situated in the middle of Spring Ranch Agricultural Preserve. On the south and east side of the house are the organic farms where the Spring brothers grow vegetables and flowers, and pumpkins in the fall. To the north of the house is a grove of giant eucalyptus trees, many of which are 6 feet in diameter. Their fragrant scent permeates the property.
Across Highway One to the west is the Spring Ranch State Park. The view to the west is unobstructed to the ocean, silhouetted by an old carriage barn, creamery barn, milking barn, and cattle barn. This is one of the most picturesque and painted vistas on the northern California coast. The state park is 300 acres of oceanfront property that is directly accessible from the house. You can walk down to your own private beach, or walk along the secluded cliffs on approximately 3 miles of trails and watch the seals pupping, the whales migrating, the 30-foot winter waves smashing against the cliffs, or the spectacular sunsets.
In addition to the Spring Ranch Park across the street, Van Damme state park is 1/4 mile to the south in Little River. Van Damme has great hiking and biking trails plus a great beach. Just to the north is the Big River park of 7,000 acres. This park is ideal for: hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming in the Big River or the ocean.
The Spring Ranch is one of the north coasts most unique vacation properties in terms of its history, character, accommodations, and location. This is an ideal spot for a family or friends retreat.
The house is decorated entirely with antiques: antique Victorian light fixtures, antique beds, cabinets, rocking chairs, couches, etc. When you step into the front door, you will feel as though you are in the 1860's
